It seems you can get designer anything nowadays. There are designer mobile phones, designer laptops and even designer bicycles.
Now with the arrival of the Fiat 500 by Gucci you can add designer cars to the list. The 500byGucci is a re-imagining of the iconic Fiat 500 by Gucci’s creative director Frida Gianni, in partnership with Fiat’s Centro Stile. This collaboration between two of Italy’s most well known and well respected brands has come about to celebrate the fashion house’s 90th birthday, and the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.
Unlike many other unconventional designer items, the 500byGucci is a very attractive and understated design. The car comes in two colours, a contemporary and racy black version with chrome detailing and contrasting black and white interiors and a more classic white, with satin chrome accents and a softer cream and black interior. Both also come of course with the instantly recognisable Gucci green and red stripes.
Another surprise for a designer collaboration, the prices are not astronomical. The economical 1.2 litre will cost £14,565 and the award-winning 0.9 litre twin-air will be priced at £15,765.
An interesting aspect of this collaboration is that the cars will initially only be available to buy online. Maybe this shouldn’t be so surprising, as we can now buy most things online, from clothing to electrical to holidays, so why not our means of transportation too?

Personally I really like the look of the 500byGucci. It’s a very attractive design, not nearly as ostentatious as I was expecting from a designer collaboration. The Fiat 500 is probably what I would buy if I could afford my own car, so the 500byGucci definitely has a thumbs-up from me!
