DIY American flag shorts

I loved the Topshop stars and stripes denim shorts that were everywhere last year, but I didn't get them as I was being a bit of a snob and didn't want such a recognisible item that everyone else had. Then Toppers released another version this summer (below right,) and again I was tempted, but their prices are kind of ridiculous now, and I wasn't going to pay £30 or more for a pair of shorts. I also found a site called Runway Dreamz who sell DIYed denim shorts and have a similar American flag pair (below left,) but they're asking $162 for them!

Images from runwaydreamz.com and topshop.com

So naturally a DIY was in order! The shorts are cut from a pair of £9 Primark jeans so I could get them the exact length I wanted, and have the rolled-up hems.
I decided that I wanted to do something a bit different though, so whilst I kept the appliqué on the "stripes" side, I decided to use studs for the "stars" side.

Watch this space for an outfit post featuring these soon! I'm planning on wearing them to Field Day festival (weather permitting!)

What do you think?

  11. You're so flippin' clever! SUCH a good idea, they look wicked :)

And I totally agree about the prices in Topshop - I rarely go in there nowadays, because even though everything's so lovely, it's just far too expensive :(

  15. you did such a great job! I might do something similar and put some star studs just on the pockets of my old denim skirt to tart it up a bit. Those studs would look nice on the shoulders of a denim jacket too.

  17. I love how you put your own spin on it! I have a pair from H&M which I got for £15 and my friend has the topshop pair which cost her about £40, way too pricey! x

  19. I bought a pair of the Topshop flag shorts lst year, but then never wore them much due to everyone buying them, and like you was tempted with the Runwaydreamz ones. I've always wanted to DIY a pair but thought it would be hard to cut the fabric to a good shape, might have to get on with it now though because yours have turned out great!
